Christopher is looking forward to a career making natural product pharma and nutraceuticals after his MSc.

Having completed an undergraduate degree in Applied Science, Christopher saw our MSc programme as an opportunity to build on existing skills and particularly enjoyed the opportunity to visit SAMS to undertake field sampling.

Why did you undertake this MSc?

I decided to undertake this MSc to compliment my undergraduate in Applied Science. Using the application of science to solve important issues. The wide variety of classes would allow me to bring different perspectives and ideas on issues both academic and within the workplace. The multi university nature of the course would allow me to meet and work with new people with different skills.

What are your ambitions for the future?

In the future I would like to make a career within the Biotechnology industry. I would like to work in developing natural product pharma and nutraceuticals. Gaining experience in this field is something I've aspired to since my undergraduate leading to a PhD somewhere in the future.

What has been your favourite part of the MSc?

The wide variety of classes have allowed me gain knowledge in a wide range of disciplines which I can develop and apply in industrial environments. My favourite class was the Blue Biotechnology course which allowed me to travel to the west coast to work with SAMS where we undertook field sampling on the coast and were taken by boat to their seaweed farm.

Where/ what do you think the next innovation in IB will be?

Throughout my studies on different IB topics and issues. I think the next innovation in IB will come from natural products produced by marine organisms such as algae and cyanobacteria. These organisms produce products with many benefits. Anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and various nutritional benefits.

What do you enjoy doing away from your studies?

Outside of studies I enjoy spending time with friends, playing video games and listening to music. I've also been developing with drawing skills by making digital art. I enjoy traveling and taking photos of landscapes. An interesting fact about me is that I used to be fencer at a local fencing club where I trained and sparred with other club members including a junior Scottish Champion.
