Role Overview:
IntelliDigest are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Scientific Lead with specialist expertise in biotechnology, enzymatic biocatalysis, and laboratory set-up and operations to drive the scientific direction of their R&D function.
The successful candidate will play a central role in establishing and overseeing laboratory operations, leading the development of biocatalytic processes, and ensuring high scientific standards across all research activities. Key Responsibilities:
Scientific Leadership
Develop and lead R&D strategies in enzymatic biocatalysis and applied biotechnology.
Provide expert guidance on enzyme discovery, optimisation, immobilisation, and application in scalable bioprocesses.
Design and oversee experiments, analyse data rigorously, and ensure reproducibility and scientific integrity.
Identify emerging trends, technologies, and opportunities to strengthen the organisation’s innovation pipeline.
Laboratory Set-Up and Oversight
Lead the design, set-up, and commissioning of new laboratory facilities, including equipment sourcing and layout planning.
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and best practices.
Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, including reagent management, equipment calibration, and risk assessments.
Ensure adherence to environmental, health, and safety standards at all times.
Team and Project Management
Line manage and mentor a team of scientists and research staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
Plan and deliver R&D projects to agreed milestones and timelines, reporting progress to the executive team and stakeholders.
Coordinate cross-functional collaboration with commercial, engineering, regulatory, and academic partners to ensure alignment with broader organisational goals.
External Engagement and Communication
Represent the organisation at scientific meetings, conferences, and industry forums.
Support external collaboration with academic institutions, funding bodies, and strategic partners.
Contribute to the preparation of technical documentation, grant proposals, scientific publications, and intellectual property filings.
Essential Requirements:
PhD (or equivalent industrial experience) in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Enzymology, Bioprocess Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Demonstrable expertise in enzymatic biocatalysis, including experience with enzyme screening, characterisation, optimisation, and scale-up.
Proven track record of leading research projects within an academic or industrial setting.
Practical experience in laboratory establishment, including infrastructure planning and operational management.
Strong analytical skills, with a methodical approach to problem-solving and data interpretation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience producing scientific reports, publications, or funding applications.
Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable Attributes:
Experience in start-up, SME, or translational research environments.
Knowledge of sustainable biotechnology, industrial bioprocessing, or circular bioeconomy principles.
Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (e.g. REACH, ISO standards, or GMP guidelines).
Experience in downstream processing, fermentation, or bioreactor operation.
