Albert Serrano Gomez

Albert joined the IBioIC in May 2021 as a Fermentation Scientist. He is responsible for aiding the delivery of industry-led fermentation projects while also supporting technical training courses and mentoring and supervising junior scientists.

After completing his BSc in Biotechnology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Albert worked for two years as a Microbiologist at Leitat Technological Center, a leading contract research institute in Spain. In Leitat, he participated in EU-funded projects related to the production and application of antimicrobial and antibiofilm biomolecules.

In 2017, Albert obtained his MSc in Biotechnology at the University of Edinburgh. As part of his master’s degree, Albert carried out a placement at Recircle Ltd, a spin-out company currently developing an industrial bioprocess to recycle rubber from end-of-life tyres. His placement laid the foundation for being offered a permanent position as Biotechnologist, working primarily in the development, optimisation and scale-up of Recircle’s fermentation process. He also conducted research in the production, isolation and purification of biosurfactants as high-value by-products of the rubber recycling process.

Albert is an adventure sports enthusiast. He is a keen mountain and gravel biker and he loves hiking in the Scottish Highlands. When he is not exploring the great outdoors, he can be found socialising with friends and enjoying some good food.
