Rebecca's interest to learn how companies balance sustainability with their business goals led her to our MSc course

In this case study, we hear from Rebecca Claire Dent, who shares how the hands-on fieldwork enhanced her enjoyment of the course.

Why did you decide to undertake this MSc?

To gain expertise in a new scientific discipline and better understand how industry is driving sustainability and innovation. I was eager to learn how companies are developing environmentally responsible solutions, addressing global challenges, and balancing business interests with the urgent need to protect our planet's future.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambition is to build a career that contributes to sustainable innovation by bridging the gap between science, business, and academia. I want to work at the intersection of these fields to drive practical, research-informed solutions that help industries reduce their environmental impact while continuing to grow responsibly and ethically.

What has been your favourite part of the MSc to date?

One of my favourite parts so far was the practical fieldwork day during the Blue Biotech residential module with SAMS in Oban. Visiting the seaweed farm by boat, touring the facility and seaweed nursery, and collecting samples on the beach while learning directly from the experts at SAMS gave us valuable insight into how marine biotechnology is applied in real-world settings. I have also really been enjoying my time on my industrial placement, where I’ve had the chance to apply what I’ve learned throughout the course in a professional environment.

Where/what do you think the next innovation in IB will be?

I think the next major innovation in Industrial Biotechnology will likely be in healthcare or green chemistry. In healthcare, IB could drive advances in personalised medicine, bio-based drug production, or synthetic biology for targeted therapies. In green chemistry, I see huge potential for IB to replace petrochemicals with sustainable bio-based alternatives, particularly in plastics and materials, reducing environmental impact and dependence on fossil fuels.

What is an interesting fact about you / what do you enjoy doing away from your studies?

Outside of my studies, I enjoy reading, I also love to travel, explore new cultures, and learn about their history. I would also love to one day visit an elephant conservation site and understand more about the efforts being made to protect them.
