Rishivanth has his sights set on a career in biomanufacturing
Modules in bioprocessing and downstream processing, along with his industry placement at MiAlgae, have piqued Rishivanth’s interest in a career in biomanufacturing, and he is looking to become an expert in this area after he completes his MSc studies.
Why did you decide to undertake this MSc?
I decided to take up this course since it was very well rounded, covering all industry relevant modules. The teaching takes place across different learning environments offered by top higher education institutions around Scotland which I believe ensures a student great exposure and opportunities to be trained by the top academicians of each domain. Moreover, the prospect of a research project in the industry is not something that is offered in most masters programme in the UK and was a major pull.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I would like to leverage my learnings from the course and my work experience in the clinical & biopharmaceutical industry to build a career in biomanufacturing. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working as Production associate at Levim Biotech LLP in India where I explored my interest industrial biotechnology and discovered my particular intrigue towards upstream processing. Modules such as bioprocessing, downstream processing and now my industrial placement at MiAlgae have further piqued my interest in biomanufacturing. I am eager to learn more and become an expert in this domain.
What has been your favourite part of the MSc?
As an international student, I really enjoyed travelling to different universities and learning along with my peers, who were mostly from Scotland. This served as the perfect platform for me to learn more about the culture here while also visiting different cities. All of this gave me a fresh outlook on life while also improving my soft skills. The exposure I have gained will be my biggest takeaway from this course and it has to be my favourite aspect.
Where/what do you think the next innovation in IB will be?
There are so many exciting innovations in various industrial biotechnology fields. Personally, I believe big data to be one of the key domains with lots of potential. With more biotech related data to analyse than ever before, big data handling and analytics can vastly improve understanding of new microbes and diseases, clinical trial recruitment and even development of crops.
What is an interesting fact about you / what do you enjoy doing away from your studies?
Having grown up playing and watching a variety of sports, I spend a lot of time following football, basketball, and F1. I also love listening to podcasts and reading about geopolitics and economics. If I am not doing any of these, I am out burning calories by running and making up by eating. :)
