Nicola’s passion for micro algae’s potential in circular value chains is driving his career ambitions

Nicola Voiculescu has particularly enjoyed learning about the circular economy in Scotland during his MSc studies, and hopes one day to launch his own start up.

Why did you undertake this MSc?

I wanted to pursue an MSc that would equip me with the necessary skills and experience to enter the biotechnology sector. The chance to be on an industrial placement was therefore a compelling element that drove me to applying for the MSc. Another strong deciding factor was the availability of a wide range of taught subjects (including elective modules), which provided a chance for me to refine my interests and build upon my strengths. Additionally, I was attracted to the opportunity of attending courses on other University campuses.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambition is to secure a position within the IB sector that aligns with my interests in microalgal cultivation. I am particularly passionate about the use and optimisation of micro algae in circular economy value chains. I would like to play a role in designing, optimising and scaling up micro algal cultures, as well as learning more about reactor design and manufacturing. My wish is that one day I will have the resources and connections to enter the market through my own start-up, but I appreciate that I still need to acquire experience, knowledge and skills.

What has been your favourite part of the MSc?

I have been enthusiastic about learning of the Circular Economy in Scotland and across the world, and the innovative solutions being pioneered in this space at both technical and legislative/regulatory levels. I am optimistic about the the changes and positive impacts a Circular Economy can have in the wider contexts of sustainability and climate targets.

Where/ what do you think the next innovation in IB will be?

The advances in information technologies, synthetic biology and analytics offer increasingly powerful tools to develop new IB bioprocesses and improve on existing ones. There is great potential for IB solutions to the management of bio-wastes with the co-product

What do you enjoy doing away from your studies?

I nurture a wide array of interests and I like to be exposed to new spheres of knowledge. I enjoy music and have played piano for more than 15 years. I like art and often attend exhibitions. I draw and paint during my free time, although there are still lots I want to learn.
