Our MSc program encouraged Sara to explore the real-world applications of the techniques she had gained through her background in biology.

In this case study, we explore why Sara Jadwiga Pawlikowska chose our course and what she believes will be the next major innovation in Industrial Biotechnology.

Why did you decide to undertake this MSc?

I was looking forward to undertake the various modules offered on this course. Especially the blue biotechnology course involving the travel to Oban and learning about algae farming. Another appealing part of this course were the various events and excursions we could take part in, including site visits to GSK and FlexBio, and the annual IBioIC conference. Finally, the opportunity to do a summer placement at one of the partnering companies was something that stood out in comparison to other similar master's courses.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I wish to continue my journey in the biotech/bioinformatics sector, while combining academic knowledge with industrial approach. In other words, knowing how things work, while applying that knowledge to existing issues. The global sustainability problem is especially close to my heart and I wish to dedicate my skills to helping make our world greener.

What has been your favourite part of the MSc to date?

I truly enjoyed the introduction to coding and data analysis, as well as learning about the business side of things. Coming into this degree with a knowledge of biology, this course taught me to look for the real-life applications of various techniques I've learned before and encouraged me to keep an open mind.

Where/what do you think the next innovation in IB will be?

There are multiple opportunities in the fast growing IB sector. Personally, I see a lot of movement around the sustainable food industry and waste valorisation. However, IB innovations are present across many different areas, making it one of the most exciting career pathways nowadays and a perfect one for anyone looking to expand their skillset, regardless of their background.

What is an interesting fact about you / what do you enjoy doing away from your studies?

An interesting fact about me is that apart from being a scientist, I'm also a writer. I published my first book at 20 and wish to keep writing alongside my biotechnology career. It's a true passion of mine. Apart from that, fun fact about me, I'm always down for a ping pong game challenge (any time of day or night), and I usually win :)
