Biotechnological Innovations for Optimised Seaweed Wellness & Economic Levelling-up

BioMara is a UK-based biotech company selling seaweed ingredients for the wellness and food industries. Harnessing a proprietary extraction platform, BioMara preserves the bioactivity of target compounds while enabling the isolation of multiple valuable ingredients from the same input biomass.

BioMara sources its seaweed from regional regenerative farms and harvesters in the UK and EU. Seaweed cultivation requires no freshwater, arable land, or fertiliser inputs, and actively improves marine ecosystems, making it one of the world’s most sustainable crops. Working closely with local suppliers, BioMara enables a supply chain that supports coastal communities and contributes to a resilient blue bioeconomy.

Backed by public and private funding, BioMara is scaling production of its lead ingredients: Thalivra and Revyntra (fucoidan-based bioactives), and Seafibrex (a high-fibre functional food additive). These products are designed to support immunity, gut health and healthy ageing, key areas of focus in the nutraceutical and food industry.

Through strong academic partnerships and third-party clinical research and analysis, BioMara is building robust scientific evidence to meet global regulatory standards and enable claims-backed marketing, giving its customers a competitive edge.

Project BioSWELL (Biotechnological Innovations for Optimised Seaweed Wellness and Economic Levelling-up) centres on the development and commercialisation of BioMara’s Thalivra fucoidan, a unique bioactive nutraceutical ingredient targets the gut health and wellness market. Extracted from sustainably sourced brown seaweed species, Thalivra is a natural health solution known for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, enzymatic inhibition and prebiotic potential. The project aims to scientifically substantiate efficacy through rigorous scientific validation while optimising the ingredient’s production at commercial scale.
