Call for Governing Board Members

The Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) is looking for a variety of experts to volunteer to join its Governing Board from August 2026 for three years in the first instance.

IBioIC was established in January 2014 with a £10m core grant from the Scottish Funding Council with a remit to create an Industrial Biotechnology (IB) Community that uses Scottish Academic assets to bring economic benefit to Scotland. IBioIC gained its second phase of funding from Scottish Funding Council, Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise in August 2018 and continued its work in growing the industrial biotechnology sector in Scotland by fulfilling the aims of the National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology. IBioIC is one of four innovation centres supported by the Scottish Funding Council via infrastructure funding. We have now secured future funding support. This allows IBioIC to deliver on its aims to support the Scottish IB ecosystem and leverage this support for greater impact.

Key achievements include:

  • developing a network of over 450 Industrial Members

  • a two-day international Annual Conference with over 400 delegates attending

  • FlexBIO open access scale-up centre for industry to develop its bioprocesses to 300L

  • practical hands-on bioprocess training packages

  • running around 40 events per year

  • attending and presented at over 80 conferences worldwide per year promoting Scottish IB

  • a network of IB Champions within universities and colleges

  • securing an Innovate UK £7.5M Launchpad programme and Cluster Management Organisation role

  • Biotechnology Innovators – Train to Scale start-up support programme

  • funding over 150 projects in academia all with industrial sponsors and co-funding

  • developing a collaborative MSc with industrial placements for >150 students

  • delivering a portfolio of >120 industrially-led PhD studentships

  • developing a HND in Industrial Biotechnology

Governing Board member experience required:

IBioIC is looking for new members for its Governing Board. It is looking for Board members who have a passion for innovation in Industrial Biotechnology with a relevant background. We are currently refreshing Board positions representing IBioIC member companies and are particularly keen to see expressions of interest from a broad diversity of applicants in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and geography. Applicants from all IB / Bioeconomy / Circular Economy / relevant Manufacturing sectors are of interest.

Governing Board Commitment required:

Total time commitment required of Board members is around six days per year. The Board meets for 2.5 hour meeting quarterly, with up to a further half day of preparation time required per meeting. Whilst attendance at every Board meeting is not mandated, a good attendance record is expected. To facilitate this, meetings operate twice in person and twice virtually throughout the year.

Governing Board members are expected to actively offer advice on strategy, act as ambassadors for IBioIC and volunteer to join the various committees of the Board of which there are three standing committees (Audit and Risk, Skills and Nominations) and numerous short-term Committees or Working Groups to progress various specialist activities of IBioIC.

There are considerable benefits to being an IBioIC Governing Board Member both reputational and practical in terms of network and access to privileged information. Whilst the position is not paid, out of pocket expenses can be reimbursed if required.
